How to Update GPL Plugins and Themes Without a License Key

Premium plugins usually update themselves once you enter a licence key. GPL copies don’t come with the developer’s key, so updates are manual: you download the new version and replace the old one. It takes two minutes once you know the steps, and WordPress has made it safer than ever with built-in “replace” support.

Why GPL plugins don’t update automatically

Automatic updates for premium plugins come from the developer’s update server, which checks your licence key before sending the new files. The plugin code itself is GPL, but the update service isn’t. Without a key the plugin works normally; it just won’t fetch updates on its own. On GPL Download, new versions are published to the product page and your account as developers release them.

Before you update

  1. Back up the site (files and database). A migration or backup plugin such as All-in-One WP Migration Pro makes this one click. See the best WordPress migration plugins.
  2. Read the changelog for breaking changes, especially major versions.
  3. Test on staging first for business-critical plugins such as WooCommerce extensions or page builders.

How to update a GPL plugin

  1. Log in to My Account → Downloads on GPL Download and download the latest ZIP.
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
  3. Choose the ZIP and click Install Now.
  4. WordPress detects the existing plugin and shows a comparison of current and uploaded versions. Click Replace current with uploaded.
  5. Check the site: the front end, the plugin’s settings page and any forms or checkouts it powers.

How to update a GPL theme

  1. Download the latest theme ZIP. If the download contains documentation and extras, unzip it and use the inner theme ZIP (its folder contains style.css).
  2. Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme, choose the ZIP and click Install Now.
  3. Click Replace current with uploaded.
  4. Your customisations are safe if they live in a child theme or the Customizer. Edits made directly to the parent theme’s files are overwritten, so move them to a child theme first.

Common update errors and fixes

  • “The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.” You uploaded the full download package. Unzip it and upload the plugin ZIP inside.
  • “Stylesheet is missing.” Same cause for themes: upload the inner theme ZIP.
  • “The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive.” Ask your host to raise the upload limit, or upload the unzipped folder by SFTP to wp-content/plugins/.
  • Licence-key notice after updating. Dismiss it; the plugin works without a key.

Keeping track of updates

If you manage many sites, keep a simple list of the premium plugins on each, check your GPL Download account monthly for new versions, and update on a staging copy first. A membership gives you access to every new version for as long as it is active.

Frequently asked questions

Can I update GPL plugins automatically?

Not through the developer’s update server, which needs their licence key. Update manually by uploading the new version, which WordPress handles in a few clicks.

Will updating a GPL plugin delete my settings?

No. Settings are stored in the database, and replacing the plugin files keeps them. Back up first anyway.

How often should I update GPL plugins?

Apply security updates promptly and other updates monthly, after testing on staging for critical plugins.

How long do I get updates from GPL Download?

Each single purchase includes a year of updates. Memberships include updates for as long as they are active.
